Pygmalion and Galatea by Gerome
This statue is inspired by Jean Leon Gerome’s 19th century painting in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, which shows the sculptor Pygmalion embracing his creation Galatea. He so fell in love with his work that he prayed to Aphrodite, the goddess of love, to make it real. His wish was granted. The image is a metaphor that true love can conquer even the most daunting odds. Made from bonded white marble,
